A New Year of Trust

    03/01/2015 11:52 am  •    Jeff  •     Uncategorized

Relationships are the back-bone of our lives. When we lose someone we love we turn to those around for comfort. When we experience joy we share it with those around. Other people give us an important reflection of ourselves. Who am I? How does this person in front of me react to me? By gauging the reactions of those around me I get to know myself better. What kind of person do I want to be? How could I have made that interaction go better?

It feels bad when someone reacts in a negative way to something I’ve said. I take a moment to reflect and adjust so that next time I get a better response. It feels good when someone reacts positively to something I’ve done or said. Imagine building your network of friends to include the people directly around your home. How would you behave differently if you were friends with the person next door? If you needed your mail brought in who do you ask? Is this person in your neighborhood?

Our Donation Request

    02/01/2015 1:36 pm  •    Jeff  •     Frequently Asked Questions

Why does hOur Exchange Ypsilanti ask for an annual donation?

Please Donate to the Time BankIt does seem a bit odd that the organization working so hard to promote the exchange of time as a currency asks for a financial donation each year. This post is written with the intent of answering why we need your financial support.

No one should be surprised that organizations need money to operate. Every business, no matter what it’s mission, costs money to run. Employees, rent, advertising, events, etc. all demand the dollar. hOur Exchange Ypsilanti is no different in this regard. We do not yet have any paid employees or rent but do advertise and host events. Membership dues are the only source of income for the exchange currently so your donations are extremely important.

We no longer require our members to pay an annual donation. If members are inclined to donate they are welcome to do so!

Our Reference Request

    01/29/2015 9:28 pm  •    Jeff  •     Frequently Asked Questions

Why does hOur Exchange Ypsilanti require two references for new members?

I have been asked a lot about our reference requests for new members. It does require a bit of explanation so here goes.

spread the word about hEY

1. Spreading the word:

Our reference request form states the following at the beginning: “We are a non-profit organization and hOur Exchange that builds community. Every exchange is based on time. Members earn and spend hours, with every hour equal regardless of the service. We respect & value everyone, no matter what your given skill set or present circumstance may be.”

Asking for references is one of our main ways of spreading the word about exchanging hours instead of money. We really like the people that apply. If you say, “yeah, I want to do that” then you are just the kind of person we want sharing your gifts. We are equally as interested in the people that you respect enough to answer questions from our organization on your behalf. That you have chosen two people to tell us who you are says to them that you are interested in the time bank.

Spreading the word this way makes the organization stronger and more trustworthy. It is also quality advertisement for the exchange.

To Share or Not to Share

    12/31/2014 1:14 pm  •    Jeff  •     Local Time Bank

improveThe idea of sharing is a good one. It is easy to understand and communicate. Yet, why is it difficult to practice? Stepping outside of our comfort zone and making ourselves vulnerable is not an easy thing to do. The first few transactions I did with other members were the most difficult for me. For one of them I had to change a light fixture and I was worried about how it would go: Will I break it? Will I get shocked? Will I be embarrassed?

I’ve changed dozens of light fixtures and this one was just as easy as the rest but why was I so nervous? I was afraid of how I would appear because I am not a licensed electrician. I love the work and have plenty of experience but I have never done it professionally. I don’t want to be a professional electrician. I just really like doing the work. Our society tells us that the only help we should get is by “professionals”. What makes a professional? Experience yes, but more importantly: MONEY. A professional has to pay for classes and take expensive tests. Big jobs do require someone who has proven themselves in this way but small stuff like changing an outlet or a fixture are easy for anyone to do.

Not everyone wants to change a fixture however and this is where hOur Exchange Ypsilanti comes in. The Time Bank gives members the opportunity to build on their existing skills by engaging in trades with other members. I can change hundreds more fixtures than I could if I was just working on my own house. This will allow me to get better and eventually feel comfortable tackling bigger jobs if I want. The same goes for mending socks or folding laundry.

We are not all professionals at what we love to do but we should be able to get better. We don’t need to pay to improve our skills when we use the Time Bank, instead, we get paid in hours. We can then use those hours to help other members advance their know-how.

Share what you love doing with others and let others share what they love doing with you.
